Dama is a game played on a small wooden board by two players, each with 12 pieces of stones, bamboo, or seeds. Each player positions the 12 pieces of “stones” on both end points of the diagram. Like chess, players move their ‘pieces’ alternately from point to point. ‘Pieces’ can only move forward diagonally along the intersection of lines, however, backward move is allowed when capturing an enemy (rules may be different in other areas of the country).

The “dama stage” is reached when a player gets his piece to the last row of the opponent’s territory. Once a particular ‘piece’ reached dama stage, it can now move 2, 4, 5, or more steps forward (or backward). The game ends once the opponent’s pieces are all captured.

The game can also be played using a chess board and its pieces.
